Zelestra Officially Connects the 108 MW La Mata Solar Plant to the Grid in Colombia
  • La Mata, with an investment of US$ 80 million, advances Zelestra’s strategy in Latin America of making decarbonization a reality for our partners in the region
  • The project, the company’s second solar plant in Colombia, affirms Zelestra’s commitment to support Colombia’s national decarbonization goals

Zelestra, a client-focused, multi-technology, global renewable energy company has connected the 108 MW La Mata solar plant to the grid in Colombia. La Mata is located in the municipality of La Gloria, in northeastern Colombia. This plant will generate an amount of energy equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 106,000 households and will displace more than 98,000 tonnes of CO2 in annual emissions.

With total investment of $80 million, the La Mata project has begun to inject carbon-free energy into the Colombian electric grid. The construction of the plant generated 1,000 jobs, most of which were filled by local workers. This project is in line with Zelestra’s new strategy to make the decarbonisation a reality for our partners, including in Colombia.

This is the company’s second project in Colombia. José Luis García, Zelestra’s CEO in Latin America stated, “This milestone is critical for Zelestra as we pursue a very ambitious plan for the region to meet its decarbonization goals. We have been present in Chile and Peru for many years, and now we are consolidating our presence in Colombia, a country where we aim to grow in the coming years.”

Zelestra is the largest independent generator of non-conventional renewables in Colombia and has also recently connected the 144 MW La Unión project in Colombia. These projects represent a significant contribution to Colombia’s energy transition and reaffirm Zelestra’s commitment to sustainability goals in Latin America and in the country.

Zelestra leverages multiple generation and energy storage technologies, including solar, wind, batteries and green hydrogen, to drive the energy transition forward. Zelestra has evolved from a centralized renewable developer to a global, customer-centric platform, providing decarbonization solutions. Backed by EQT, one of the world’s largest private equity firms, Zelestra boasts global capabilities, local expertise, and a strong balance sheet to deliver results for its clients.
