Zelestra begins construction of two new solar plants in Spain to serve Graphic Packaging International with clean energy

Aug 14, 2024

  • The two projects, Socovos II and José Cabrera, are located in Albacete and Guadalajara respectively, holding a combined capacity of 83 MW
  • The new plants will displace more than 71,500 tons of CO2 emissions per year, reinforcing Zelestra’s commitment to supporting Spain’s national decarbonization goals

Zelestra, a global, multi-technology, customer-focused renewable energy company, has begun the construction of two new solar power plants in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. These plants, Socovos II and José Cabrera, will be located in Albacete and Guadalajara, respectively, and together will add 83 MW of new renewable power capacity.

The José Cabrera plant, located in Guadalajara, will have a capacity of 50.4 MW, while Socovos II, in Albacete, will have a capacity of 33 MW. Together, these two new photovoltaic plants will produce the energy equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 37,500 households. This production will help displace the use of conventional sources of electricity generation, avoiding the emission of more than 71,500 tons of CO2 per year. These facilities are scheduled to come into operation in 2025. The generation output will supply Graphic Packaging International with renewable energy through a virtual PPA signed with Zelestra.

In addition to their contribution to the environment, the construction and operation of these facilities will create local jobs in their different stages.

Leo Moreno, Zelestra’s CEO, commented: “We are proud to contribute to Spain’s energy future and to generate economic and environmental benefits for the country. The construction of these plants demonstrates our focus on execution in Spain, one of our key growth markets.”

With the start of these projects, Zelestra reaffirms its commitment to the energy transition in Spain, where the company operates 384 MW.
