Zelestra begins construction of the Ginosa solar plant in Puglia, Italy

Apr 16, 2025

  • The Ginosa plant will have an installed capacity of 6.5 MWdc and its construction has created around 50 jobs.
  • A ten-year PPA with BKW Energy has enabled the construction of two solar projects in total, Ginosa and Bellomo, with a total capacity of 16 MWdc.
  • The plant will avoid the emission of nearly 3,700 tons of CO2 per year.

Zelestra, a global, multi-technology, customer-focused renewable energy company, has started the construction of a new solar power plant in the region of Puglia, Italy. Located in Ginosa, in the province of Taranto, the project will have an installed capacity of 6.5 MWdc and an annual production of 11.7 GWh.

The project is part of a broader collaboration with BKW Energy, which signed a 10-year PPA with Zelestra to purchase renewable energy. As well as Ginosa, the agreement will also see the construction of the Bellomo project (commencing later this year), located in Modica, Sicily, which will have an installed capacity of 9.5 MWdc.

The construction Ginosa has created around 50 jobs, and the project is scheduled to start operating in February 2026. Once operational, the solar plant will avoid the emission of nearly 3,700 tons of CO2 per year.

Eliano Russo, Zelestra’s Country Manager in Italy, said: “Italy is a key growth market for Zelestra, and this project is an important step on our journey to help customers across the country with their decarbonization ambitions. The clean energy solutions that we co-create with our customers directly enhance the green economy, by creating jobs and delivering new infrastructure that will support emissions reduction goals for decades to come.”

Altenia is the main EPC contractor for Ginosa. As a part of the Terna Energy Solutions Group, Altenia provides advanced, customized solutions for every stage of the high and medium-voltage infrastructure lifecycle, serving as a trusted partner for companies and investors in the energy sector.

Zelestra currently has approximately 30 projects under development in Italy, with a total capacity of over 500 MW, and the company is aiming to triple its pipeline in the next two years. Recently, Zelestra was named among the top 10 sellers of clean energy to corporate customers globally by BloombergNEF (BNEF), and number 2 in Europe, Middle East and Asia.
